Try Backwards Scrapbooking for Thanksgiving
Monday November 19, 2007
Backwards scrapbooking is simply coming up with what a scrapbook page about an event will look like before the event even takes place. Have you ever selected a sketch for a scrapbook page and then snapped the photos and came up with the journaling for the layout? No? Wait! Before you decide that this is a crazy idea, let me explain the benefits:
- You will have already thought about your focal point photo - do you want it vertical or horizontal?
- You will know a minimum of how many supporting photos you will need.
- You can be thinking about your journaling while the event is taking place, perhaps even jotting down a few notes about things you want to remember.
- Pick a Sketch - Choose a sketch from the three new free sketches in this week’s gallery, or from the many other layout galleries containing sketches here on About.com Scrapbooking.
- Snap Your Photos - As you gather with friends and family to celebrate Thanksgiving (or any other event that is important to you such as holidays, birthdays, or even everyday moments such as playing at the local park) take the photos you will need to fit the sketch.
- Prepare to Journal - Jot down some notes for filling in the journaling boxes on your scrapbook page design. When the event is over, print your photos and complete the scrapbook page.

I have been doing reverse scrapbooking for a long time. If a graduation is approaching I plan ahead how I want my page to look like, and when the graduation day finally arrives, I look for the perfect moment, and take my photos as planned! Otherwise, I may later regret not taking that perfect photo.
Backwards scrapbooking even changed the way I photograph. I’m always looking through the lens with an eye for my scrapbooking page layout.
Great idea. I just designed a scrapbook for my brother-in-law’s 50th surprise birthday party. I was able to print all the photos on my Snap printer right at the party and complete the book for him to take home that night. I guess this is a form of backward scrapbooking too.
This is definitely a smart approach to Scrapbooking. Especially for people wishing to make a scrapbook for the first time.
It allows beginner scrapbooking artists to see the value of their photo’s in relation to the page - thereby taking the ease off of layout designs FOR the photo’s (which are already busy enough). Sometimes that approach is more difficult.
Great way to simplify it too!
Thank you.
