Scrapbooking, like any visual art, goes through trends in colors, design ideas, embellishments, and details. As you flip through the Top Ten Scrapbook Pages from CHA Summer 2010, what do you see as a common thread in two or more scrapbook page layouts? What trends do you see developing in these new products and designs? Next week, I will share with you the trends that I noticed, but I would love to hear from you about what you see as you peruse these 10 fabulous scrapbook pages. Click on "Comments" below to add your thoughts and we will see how many different trends we can all pick out in these ten layouts.

banners, banners, banners !!!
and althought they are all very beautiful, they could almost scare off anyone without a degree in design.
Lots of layers, banners, machine stitching, lace
Lots of 1) machine stitching of papers and photos; 2) pennants (or flags if you prefer); and 3) Two of the pages sported butterflies, and a couple used buttons. Although these pages are beautifully executed, the designs and embellishments have been going on for a while. Nothing jumped out at me and said, “Hey, I’m new! Try me!” The only thing I really hadn’t seen before was the use of the circle on #9 when a photo took up only half of the photo with the other half displaying a complementary printed paper. That was a bit different.
Lots of layers and soft, muted colors!
I see the banner trend continues. There’s also lots of layering which I always feels give rich texture to a page. There’s more single-photo pages than multi-photo unfortunately.
I noticed soft colors on the paper, lots of different patterned paper used on a page, lots of layers and lots of embellishments. Three pages used the banners or penants across them. Several used black and white or sepia photos to go with the soft colors of the papers, giving it a gentle or a vintage look. Most of them were subtle pages, alot going on, on the page but done softly.
I’m a butterfly fanatic and loved the use of the butterfly embellishments on two of them. I loved all the pages.
more one photo layouts, more black and white printed photos, more cut out designed papers, the banners as someone else said, and the machine stitching (which I never did get… if you are going to sew go ahead and make a fabric keepsake—like a quilt). the shaped aperatures on the papers as well
I noticed that the layout had a small % of the page is made up of photos – maybe 25-30%. The other 70 – 75% is embellishment. There were lots of layers.
Hi, Rebecca, and thanks for sharing a bit of CHA with those of us who remained behind! While there are many similarities among the 10 layouts, the most obvious (especially when you look at the gallery as a whole) is the muted color palate. Disappointing to one who loves bright bold colors! I think that color helps direct the “mood” of the viewer, and these layouts are sadly subdued. The second common thread is, of course, the layering. I do use layering in my scrapbooking to add dimension, but not to the point that the layering becomes the focal point and leaves the picture(s) behind. On a more positive note, the page designs are magnificent, although most not new.
Lots of sewing on the page, banners and in my opinion, way too much going on. I’m more of a simple scrapbooker…..I like the ideas presented on these pages, but I agree with an earlier comment that all the busy-ness sort of takes away from the photo(s). Thankfully, they are muted/subtle tones and not the bright WOW colors that would TOTALLY overwhelm the pictures.
The things that stick out to me are the stitching, layering and banners. I love the layouts! I am a fan of the stitching, whether it’s an old method or not. I just think it adds a lot of character to the page
Banners, banners, and more banners. A bit too much, in my opinion. Stitching is still popular, but not my thing. I think there is way too much going on in these layouts for my taste. I place the focus on my photos, not the embellishments. Some of the new papers are beautiful, but the layouts are way overdone.
Great article! I love the banner trend. I linked to your Spot the Trend post in today’s daily scrapbook news article at http://exm.nr/9MvuDP
Most notable to me is the muted colors/tones. Then stitching, banners.
All of the above, but no one mentioned the scallops – on edges, on lace, and in the form of small half circles. I like muted colors, but papers like that aren’t easy to find.
I noticed the banners as well as B&W photos. Too much stuff on the pages. I like simpler lines.
Just like everyone else I noticed the b&w photos, muted colors, stitching, banners and the single photo’s. I also noticed a lot of pop dotted items, waved or scalloped type items and or edges, and even the use of twine in a couple of them
I noticed the muted grays and blues, black and white swirls -all very muted color palettes. Waves and stars used a lot and many patterned papers with small prints used on pages. The large circles or portions of circles in the background and stitching on lots (or faux stitching). In addition to banners, several had a small architectural item at the top in the center. I liked the look, especially with the black and white photos.
Muted colors; homespun looks. Seems we’re going back to our roots!
