Making
Heritage Scrapbook Pages by Hot Off the Press offers an overview of the process
of creating a heritage album that is informative and detailed enough for the
beginning scrapbooker and also offers tips and layout ideas that the more
experienced scrapper will appreciate.
The
book starts with some tips on how to begin researching your family
history and suggestions for collecting, preserving and categorizing old family
photos including how to remove photos, which were saved in unhealthy
environments. Some of the topics covered in this section are Defining the Scope
which gives you an idea how to establish the parameters of your project; Finding
Photos and Stories, which includes searching through your own storage areas and
also telephoning family and friends to gather photos; and Interviews, which
gives suggestions for gathering names, dates, places and family stories for your
heritage album. Next, there is a
section on the care and keeping of the photos and memorabilia that is collected
including Rescue & Removal of Photos, Care of Photos & Negatives,
Reproducing Photos, Sorting & Storing Photos, and Memorabilia.
The next chapter, Gathering Tools & Supplies, details
those items you will want to have on hand before you scrapbook and has a section
on Album Types & Styles, Solid & Patterned Paper, Using Color, Using
Patterned Papers, Tools, Scissors & Cutting Tools, Punch-Outs, Stickers
& Die Cuts, Pens, Adhesives and Album Organization.
The majority of the book gives more detail into the process
of scrapbooking, beginning with a chapter on The Basics of Scrapbooking.
It offers advice specifically for heritage albums such as Mystery Pages
and also covers topics such as Journaling, Layout, Matting Photos and Cropping
Photos plus there are lots of sample (75) layouts to inspire your most creative
pages.
There are many helpful ideas and tips.
One technique that I found interesting is on page 12 of the book: "where one person (or area) in a group
photo is reproduced and enlarged." There
is an example of a family photo shown with an insert of a main character
enlarged on the same page.
Also included is a questionnaire sample to give to
relatives for gathering information and jogging memories, a glossary of terms
and another bonus, there are 48 Paper Pizzazz sheets included in colors and
patterns especially suited to heritage albums. This is an excellent reference book for your scrapbook
library.
