An ABC Album: A Gift for Generations

Dateline: 02/13/00

Last Fall, I began work on an ABC album for a Christmas gift for my 2 year old daughter. Using some Creative Memories ideas, I made a personalized album that will be treasured by my little girl for years to come. Each page of the 8x10 album has a letter of the alphabet in the corner and pictures of items that start with that letter mounted on the page. Many of the pictures include my daughter either wearing, playing with, or standing by the objects. This gift would be equally appropriate for a niece, nephew, grandchild, godchild, or the child or children of close friends and could be given on just about any gift giving occasion. An appropriate age of the recipient may be between birth and Kindergarten, children who will be or are learning the alphabet and phonics.

To begin, you need to go through the extra pictures that you have and find any that are good examples of one word, i.e. dog, house, car. Set these pictures aside, after making a list of the words that they represent. After you see what you already have, which may be a little or a lot, it's time to take some pictures. At the end of this article you will find a list of ideas for each letter (you'll be surprised how hard it is to come up with these simple words when you have camera in hand). Other good sources for ideas are children's dictionaries or first words books. The next thing I did was, for about three months (the time required will vary), carry a list of words around with my camera. I had a column of "have's" and "need's."
