Vellum & Eyelets

by Sara Naumann for Hot Off the Press

It’s clear: versatile vellum papers are the hottest thing in scrapbooking! And if there’s one tool scrappers have fallen in love with, it’s eyelets. What happens when we combine these two hot techniques on one album page? The results are fantastic—take a look at the album page created by scrapbook specialist and teacher Arlene Peterson.

Sample Layout:
Arlene & Missy

Arlene coordinated a clever combination of patterned and pastel vellum papers to make this page, framing her photo beautifully and effectively with vellum strips and lengths of ribbon. Gorgeous! (Click on the sample page to the left to see it in greater detail.)

Here’s How She Did It:

  1. Layer pink flower vellum over a sheet of clouds paper for extra dimension. Mat your photo on blue vellum and outline in gold pen.

  2. Cut four 3/4”x11” and four 3/4”x8 1/2” strips of blue leaf vellum and outline the long edges in gold. Place two lengths on each side and weave as they intersect with two strips along the top and bottom of the page. Where each strip crosses, attach an eyelet.

  3. Thread ribbon between the vellum strips; glue the ends to secure. Use the remaining ribbon to make a shoestring bow and glue it to the page.

  4. Journal on blue vellum and attach to the page with eyelets. Glue the photo to the center of the page.

In Arlene’s Supply Box:

  • Patterned Paper Pizazz™: patterned vellum from Tone-on-Tone Vellum; pastel vellum from Pastel Vellum Papers; clouds paper available by the sheet (all Paper Pizazz™ supplies are available at www.paperpizazz.com)

  • 1/8” wide white satin ribbon with gold edges from Offray

  • Gold eyelets from Stamp Studio

  • Gold pen from Pentel

Eyelet Tips:

Eyelets are ideal for attaching vellum without worrying about the inevitable glue show-through dilemma. For easy eyelet attaching, follow these steps:

  1. Decide where you want the eyelet positioned, then punch a hole.

  2. Insert the eyelet in the hole. Hold it in place and flip your paper over. Lay your paper on an old cutting mat or other protective surface. (Otherwise the hammering will damage your table.)

  3. Position the eyelet setter into the back of the eyelet, placing the pointy tip in the middle of the eyelet. Hold the eyelet setter steady, then pound the setter 3-4 times with a hammer.

  4. Remove the eyelet setter, then tap lightly on the back of the eyelet with your hammer to finish it.

Eyelet tools:

  • Hole Punches: You’ll want an Anywhere Hole Punch (which you can place anywhere on a page) or a 1/8” hand-held hole punch.

  • Hammers: A hammer is a personal preference. Some people prefer lightweight tack hammers; if you have difficulty with your wrists or hands, a heavier hammer is probably best.

  • Eyelets: There are plenty of eyelet choices available on the market. Arlene’s favorite eyelets come from Stamp Studio. “The eyelets are easy to work with and come in great colors.”

“We know scrappers love vellum—which is why we create so much vellum Paper Pizazz™,” says Arlene. “Scrappers also ask us what they can do with vellum, so we published an instruction book called—voila!—What Can I Do With Vellum. You can find this page plus 81 additional pages in this book.”
