A torn piece of paper across the top of your page makes an effective and eye-catching border.

Tip: Papers can be colored all the way through or have color laid on the surface. Know your paper's composition before you tear it. Look at an edge and you'll probably be able to see if the core of the paper is white.

Car Embellishment: I enlarged an outline of a car that I found in a motor vehicle book. Then I traced the enlarged car with tracing paper. Finally, I enlarged the tracing to the size I wanted. This seems like a lot of steps, but when an image is small, sometimes it gets "muddy" when you enlarge it.

Tip: Notice that all the art elements on this page overlap. The photo of my niece very slightly touches the top border, the journaling block and the road. Overlapping like this creates unity. Try overlapping your elements before you paste any pieces down.

Tip: The journaling box is actually the mat for a round photo on this page.

Page Title: I drew lightly over the page title lettering and around the circle with a water color pencil. By smearing a damp cotton tip swab over the pencil, I created the subtle shading of color on the journaling.

Putting It All Together: The road is wonderful flannel paper. Along with the torn edge of the border, the flannel adds texture. A simple page will look much more complicated if you remember to add texture with the paper-tearing, layering, surface textures, distressing, quilling, crumpling, whatever.
