Paper Piecing: Circles and Ovals
Another fun and easy
way to try out paper piecing is to create pieces for your pages using tools that
you already have, such as your circle/oval cutter. No matter what brand of
cutter you use these ideas will get you started having a great time paper
piecing. All of the objects on this page were made from simple
geometric shapes. By clicking on the picture you will be able to view it in
greater detail and pick out the shapes used for each item.
- The lady bug is put together using a small black circle for the head, two larger circles (one black for the body, one red cut in half for the wings), and black circle punches for dots.
- The bear, cat, and dog, all began with a circle for the head and an oval for the muzzle. The features that make each one unique were added with either punch pieces or free-hand cuts of paper.
- The rubber ducky is simply a small circle for the head and a larger oval for the body. Details such as the bill, tail, and feet were added with scraps cut to shape using my imagination. See rubber ducky sample page.
- One of my personal favorites is the candy corn. To begin cut a large yellow circle. Layer a smaller orange circle on top of that, and finish it off with a small white circle in the center. Cut this bulls-eye looking creation into six equal sections (similar to how you would divide pie). Each of these section becomes and individual piece of candy; all you need to do is round each of the three corners.
- The watermelon slice is created with two ovals. Cut one oval out of green paper, and a smaller oval out of red paper. Layer these together and cut in half. I then used a heart punch on black paper to make the seeds. Each heart cut in half makes two tear-drop shape seeds. Of course the same may be accomplished with a tear drop punch or simply a black pen. See Summer watermelon sample page.
- The heart punch was again used for wings on the bumble-bee. The body is a small yellow oval which has had black lines drawn on it.
Layout Ideas:
Summer: Includes the watermelon slice shown above.
Tub Time: Uses the rubber ducky shown above.
