What You Need to Know: Paper Piecing
Part I: Finding a Pattern

Paper piecing is one of the most popular trends in scrapbooking today. Whether they are creating intricate scenes or simply adding a small embellishment to their pages, scrapbookers are paper piecing more and more frequently. Knowing where to look for a pattern is the first step for any paper pieced scrapbooking project. Here is a quick list of resources that scrapbookers will find useful.

Where to Look for Patterns:

  • Paper Piecing Pattern Retailers - Of course this may seem the most logical choice as a place to start looking. Several manufacturers sell direct from their web sites. Others can be found at the major online scrapbook store retailers.
  • Craft Magazines and Books - Do you already subscribe to Crafts Magazine, or have a collection of craft books in your hobby supplies? You may already have a treasure trove of patterns just waiting for you to adapt them into paper piecing patterns. The example above was from a pattern in this month's issue of Crafts. It was originally meant to be made from wood and painted, however the Pilgrims were so cute they were begging to be used on a Thanksgiving scrapbook page.
    • Crafts Magazine - This magazine appeals to crafters of all skill levels and of multiple craft interests.
    • Other craft books are available at your local craft store. Several brand new books by Design Originals focus on patriotic themes and would make beautiful paper piecing patterns after you used them to make all sorts of wonderful red, white, and blue crafts to demonstrate your patriotism. Look for these titles at your local craft store: Celebrate America Painted Wood Decor, Proud of America Wreaths and Banners, and Stars and Stripes Painting for Home Decor.
  • Paper Piecing Pattern Books - Some of the best bargains for patterns can be found in book bound pattern collections. A few favorites are listed below:
  • Coloring Books - You can always dig out your the coloring books and look for just the right picture to use for a pattern. Or, even better, search one of the numerous online coloring book page collections to find the character you are looking for to complete the perfect page.
  • Free Online Patterns - Of course the most popular place online to find patterns is from one of the many online collections of free patterns. These patterns have been provided by manufacturers, retailers, and other scrapbookers.
    • Free Paper Piecing Patterns: Links to past articles on About Scrapbooking that contain Free Patterns plus many more links to sites all over the internet. This is the most comprehensive list of free patterns you will find anywhere!
