Before You Buy a Weekend at a Scrapbook Retreat

One of the most productive places for scrapbooking can very well be a retreat weekend. Getting away with other scrapbookers to a place where someone else does the cooking and cleaning while all you do is scrap sounds heavenly to every one of us. However, before you choose a retreat destination here is some things you will want to consider.

Location, Location, Location
Decide what is most important to you for your retreat. Do you want a resort setting, a hotel atmosphere, or a homey cozy ambiance? As you look into the different settings you will want to decide which one appeals to you the most. You will also need to determine how far you are willing to travel to attend a retreat. With airfares low, you may be able to venture out much farther than you may have thought before.

Recreational Activities
Are you planning to take a break from scrapbooking to enjoy other activities over the weekend? Are you looking for somewhere with a lake, a pool, a hot tub, or other recreational activities available? Or do you simply need a table and a floor lamp and you are "good to go?" Many scrapbook retreat weekends offer some sort of amenities based on their location. You may want to keep in mind that time flies when you are scrapping. I have found that most scrapbookers at retreats do not stop scrapbooking to take in recreational opportunities over their retreat weekend, however more and more facilities are providing these extra amenities to lure you to come scrapbook with them.

Read the Fine Print
We can never be sure that something will not come up and disrupt our travels plans, therefore you need to know what your options will be should you need to postpone or cancel your trip. Will you be able to apply your deposit to a future stay? Will you be required to pay more than your deposit as a cancellation fee? Ask the hostess when you are booking your stay to be sure that you completely understand your contractual obligations.

Put Together a Scrapbooking Group for the Trip
Many retreats offer group discounts. Ask what constitutes a "group" when you call for information from a get-away location. If you are able to bring along some friends the weekend will not only be more fun, but also possibly less expensive!

Ask About Products for Use and For Sale
One of the attractions of most scrapbook retreats is a collection of tools that scrapbookers may use while working at that location. Do they have a die cut machine, template collection, rubber stamp supply, etc? Ask before you book if this is something that appeals to you and your group.
Also, you may want to ask what supplies will be available for purchase on location. If you need page or adhesive refills will they be available? Check, so that you can shop ahead of time if need be.
