05/24/01 19:10:44 <scrapbookingADM> ok gang....we are going to have a moderated chat
tonight so that we can all follow along....so ....
<scrapbookingADM> I will have Joanna say a few words and then if you have a question for
her...
<colagirl7> HI Joanna
<scrapbookingADM> please type a ""?"" and I will call on you in turn
<Joanna> Hi, you'all. I'm a newbie and a scrapaholic, so Rebecca had to coach me through
this. But I want you to know I took a shower and dressed up and shaved my legs.
<Cristy> ?????????
<Cat> You look great!
<Sandy> LOL
<scrapbookingADM> lovely Joanna!
<scrapbookingADM> <smile>
<scrapbookingADM> Joanna...why dont you start off by telling us about your new book One
Minute Journaling: what it will have in it...when it will be released etc.
<Joanna> Okay. It was born on National Scrapbooking Day and you should be able to get it
right now.
<scrapbookingADM> cool!...what is One Minute Journaling...conceptually?
<Joanna> I show you lots of ways to speed up your journaling and then how to get it on the
pages faster. Lots of tricks I use to write FAST. It's kind of four years of journalism school
in one book with scrapbook pages. And lots of multiple page spreads.
<Laura> Ooh, sounds good
<Melissa> ?
<Joanna> NP (My computer savvy niece says that's computer for no problem/
<scrapbookingADM> ok..Cristy...go ahead with your question :)
<Cristy> Joanna, first I wanted to say It was a pleasure to meet you at the convention. You
problem don't remember me but I do you. Now I don't have a very common problem, actually most
people wouldn't call it a problem at all but I do. I journal too much and end up with alot of
writing crammed in a small place. I've tried making bigger boxes but then I do the same thing,
cram alot into a bigger place. What can I do to cut back the writing?
<Joanna> Why would you want to do that? Instead, add pages.
<Cristy> But nobody is going to want to read 4 pages worth of writing about my son standing
up the first time.
<scrapbookingADM> nodding...I agree with Joanna...you wouldnt want to cut back on the
journaling ...your kids will love to read all that when they are grown up.
<Joanna> After all, your writing is really important and I suspect it also serves you
psychologically so why not roll with it?//
<Kathy> ?
<scrapbookingADM> Melissa....your turn
<Melissa> Do you have sample page layouts in your Journaling Book?
<Joanna> You bet. And I'm darned proud of 'em, too.
<Melissa> Good - thank you!
<Melissa> ?
<scrapbookingADM> <smile> Joanna's pages are lovely....now is a great time to add that
starting next week Joanna will have a monthly feature here on About.com Scrapbooking called
Quick and Easy pages. Each will have a layout and suggestions, tips, and techniques for great
and quick scrapbooking.
<Joanna> I really think my newest pages are my best work. I keep trying to get better and I
think these really show how words work well with images.es.
<scrapbookingADM> Kathy your turn
<Kathy> I've read your suggestions about left side and right side of the brain and leaving
blanks to add journaling later.
<Cristy> ?
<Kathy> But I have a hard time since I don't know how much space to leave until I actually
write it! Suggestions?
<Polly> ?
<Joanna> I typically leave a space about the size of one photo per page. Often I don't know
how much room I'll need, but this guide works for me.
<Laura> Oh, that's a good idea!
<Joanna> Then, I've been learning new ways to add more journaling space...
<Joanna> Like pull-tabs and doors and a new product from Paper Adventures called Flippers.
<scrapbookingADM> love the Flippers!
<Joanna> 'Cause I never know how much room I'll need either/
<Joanna> Aren't the Flippers cool?/
<Karinasmum> ?
<scrapbookingADM> k...Melissa is next
<Melissa> What are some easy alternatives to journaling around photos. I seem to be in a rut!
<Joanna> Do you mean putting the writing around the photos physically?/
<Melissa> Yes - that's where I do most of my journaling.
<Joanna> Hmmm. I like captions. In journalism school, we learned they garner a lot of
attention.
<Joanna> You might try them. And I love big boxes with whole stories. Treat them like
embellishments. I even mat them./
<Melissa> That's a good idea. How do you suggest we do more for our journaling?
<Joanna> Don't just tell us about the photos. That we can see...tell me about something funny
that happened that you don't have a picture of or tell me how you felt. Or share a comment a
family member made after the event../
<scrapbookingADM> all great ideas!....Cristy is next
<Melissa> Thank you! I used to love to write but I don't as an adult./
<Cristy> In my current album, most of the journaling has been done in my eyes (or how I seen
the event), but lately my oldest son has started telling me how he feels about things. How can
I make the journaling in his voice and make people understand it is him?
<Joanna> Lots of ways...
<Joanna> You can write his thoughts in different fonts, in different ink colors and perhaps
in italics. Also, you can put his comments in quotation marks and leave yours without if you
want to combine the two./
<Kathy> ?
<scrapbookingADM> KarinasMum your ?
<Karinasmum> what is/are Flippers
<scrapbookingADM> ( she is in Australia by the way Joanna...multinational chat tonight)
<Joanna> They are mini-archival page protectors. By the way, I want a home out in the gum
trees, a sheep or too and a kangeroooo
<Karinasmum> dont we all!
<scrapbookingADM> they are a new product from Paper Adventures....
<Joanna> You can add a Flipper on top of your base page to double the space. Think of a kid's
book with flaps that you can lift.../
<scrapbookingADM> maybe the page with the Flipper should be the first Quick and Easy page we
put up Joanna...do you have a preference for order?
<Melissa> What kind of albums do they work in?
<Joanna> Nope. That might be a good way to share the concept./
<scrapbookingADM> they can be cut to work in any album, really
<Joanna> And with any paper, too.
<scrapbookingADM> ok..Kathy is next go ahead
<Kathy> What ""voice"" do you recommend we use in our journaling? I typically write my
journaling in 3rd person voice since I was never interested in, say, writing in my kids baby
books as if they had said everything. Do we need to be consistent throughout an album?
<Joanna> Hmmm.
SheilaS ?
<Joanna> I think you need to be consistent within a page spread, that is two facing pages
should be the same voice so you don't confuse someone. Otherwise, I'd feel free to switch, but
if your aim is to create an entire album, you might want to use the same voice throughout or
the same type style for each particular voice./
<scrapbookingADM> I like the different type style concept....of course that would mean
computer journaling....
<Sandy> ?
<scrapbookingADM> you have shared that you like to computer journal even if you are going to
handwrite it later tell them about that Joanna.
<Joanna> Ok
<Joanna> First, though you could write by hand and change pens, colors, or from print to
cursive
<scrapbookingADM> nodding..true
<Joanna> I always computer write first. That way I get the benefit of spell check and grammar
help. Since it has been proven that our spelling skills decline with age I'm happy for the
help!
<scrapbookingADM> mine have already...:)
<Sandy> nodding ...
<Joanna> Plus, it's so easy to change what I write on the 'puter and then I can be more
specific and clear when I copy stuff into my book./
<scrapbookingADM> Sheila's turn
<SheilaS> Is there a good way to put in the names of people and make it interesting
journaling at the same time?
<Joanna> I like to add the names under people in the photos by hand. But then tell the story
or larger info perhaps by computer. I also will add a date or place in small print by hand in
a corner 'cause while it's important, unless you are called before a grand jury hey, the right
year within one or two is good enough!
<scrapbookingADM> <smile> thus freeing up those of us who are complusive about chronological
order in our albums
<Joanna> Ahem, who would be compulsive like that?/
<scrapbookingADM> lol
<scrapbookingADM> <looking around>
<Sandy> not me!
<Laura> I used to be <g>
<Melissa> I can't stand dates out of whack! That's why CM albums were not the best choice for
me but I still use them. I've dismantled one or two. Thanks to undu!
<Joanna> Guys, you are so much further ahead than I am. I only use 3-ring binders.
<Melissa> Do you journal first or scrap first?
<colagirl7> ?
<scrapbookingADM> good question
<Joanna> Thanks for asking.
<Melissa> Do you keep a journal to do your scrapping journaling from?
<Joanna> I keep a running list of ideas I want to journal about. Sometimes all I have is one
line. Then I also make little thumbnail sketches on papers. And I keep a notebook by my
s'booking stuff so that when I get a new idea, it's captured. So either can come first. The
main thing is to nab those little squirrels before they get away./
<Melissa> If you really think about it, journaling is as important as the photos and I don't
think I give it that ""reverence"" it needs. I think I'm going to start a journal for that
reason.
<Joanna> Certainly research shows it has beneficial psychological effects.
<Melissa> For example, my daughter lost her first tooth yesterday and she asked to Tooth
Fairy for jewels, not money.
<Sandy> LOL
<Joanna> What a hoot! Isn't that cool!
<scrapbookingADM> aww too cute
<scrapbookingADM> colagirl...your turn
<colagirl7> Where can I find the page flippers? It seems that no one in town knows what I am
talking about when I ask for them.
<Melissa> I will be sure to journal all of that as well as her excitement when she found a
pearl for her add a pearl necklace.
<Joanna> Check out www.paperadventures.com and look for a local store./
<scrapbookingADM> absolutely Melissa!!!! that is a wonderful gift
<scrapbookingADM> woohooo Joanna you computer pro you...check out the link...very nice
<Melissa> I didn't mean to cut into colagirl's question.
<Joanna> Sometimes I put a story with a mundane photo...(did I do good?)
<colagirl7> I need to go back and journal in my fisrt album, any suggestions on how to speed
up the process?
<scrapbookingADM> (nodding you did good)
<Joanna> So, like when you have extras, or those kinda posed shots, I add a funny or poignant
or embarrassing story.
<scrapbookingADM> np..Melissa...it was fine
<Melissa> She only receives it for her first tooth - otherwise the TF would be broke.
<scrapbookingADM> lol...true
<LindajoyHOST> ?
<Joanna> Now, how to speed up that journaling of the first album...Start by taking notes and
tossing them in a file or a pile. Let your subconscious help you. Then sit down and write at
the computer. Let it sit and return to it. Too many of us try to write a lot at once, and
that's a shame because our mind is still working to dredge stuff up./
<scrapbookingADM> Linda...your turn
<Melissa> I think we suffer from wanting to put a page protector on a page and say it's done
without really reflecting.
<colagirl7> thanks
<Sandy> I agree melissa
<LindajoyHOST> First I want to thank you for your first bookbit cured my problems.
<LindajoyHOST> I loved the conquering writers block
<Joanna> I've learning to post my pages where I can see them with the page protector on, and
let them ""talk to me."" They often say, "Hey, Girl, you're not done here."
<LindajoyHOST> when you take notes into your computer how do you file them?
<Joanna> Thanks for the kind words about the book. How do I file? Alphabetically.
<LindajoyHOST> by event or person
<Joanna> I sing it to myself all the time. Okay, well, I use both event and person. Usually
one will eventually seem better and then I compile the file.
<scrapbookingADM> lol...picturing Joanna humming the ABC's
<LindajoyHOST> I also love your newsletters! I can't thank you enough!
<Joanna> Hey, that was hard for me to learn. Don't laugh! I sang it all through college.
Quietly,though.
<scrapbookingADM> Linda is one of your biggest fans. (and my right hand on the forum)
<Joanna> You are welcome. The Story Starters really make me pause and reflect on my life.
<Joanna> Obviously she's a woman of good taste and fine breeding.
<scrapbookingADM> obviously
<LindajoyHOST> lol
<Sandy> What a hoot
<Melissa> Wow, I need to go back and really journal in my kids' books. I do write them a
letter every year on their birthday and I could put that into their albums. They just seem so
personal.
<Joanna> Oh, that would be wonderful!
<scrapbookingADM> the page flipper concept works great for journaling that you dont want to
have right in the open on a page...dont you think Joanna?
<Joanna> Also, think of the funny stuff. That's the most precious to me. I can't believe some
of the stuff my son pulls./
<scrapbookingADM> or a vellum envelop that could contain the letter.
<Melissa> You all don't think it would be funny for all their friends to see?
<Melissa> Those are good ideas. I've got a lot of years to go back to!
<Joanna> Yes, I like being able to hide somethings. In fact, have you read the journaling
under the Blue Angels page?
<scrapbookingADM> ahem....ummm...well...have I read the journaling on that page
yet...well....
<Joanna> I think their friends would think they are the luckiest kids on earth.
<colagirl7> I've started my daughter out early(she's 6)and I told her that every page needs a
title, pictures and the STORY. In her own words ,spelling errors and all...she even uses
crayons! it's truly a beautiful book.
<scrapbookingADM> thats wonderful colagirl!!!!
<Melissa> Neat, colagirl!
<Joanna> I love the spelling errors. It tells so much about how they are growing
academically.
<Joanna> And think, eventually, we go back to the same errors! And with no excuse!
<Melissa> My two older ones will receive scrapbooks this year at Christmas. They love craft
activities and fancy scissors/
<scrapbookingADM> Joanna do you have a favorite journaling tip...something you wish everyone
knew?
<colagirl7> she will never forget her childhood
<Joanna> Hmmm. I think it would be...
<LindajoyHOST> buy her book LOL
<scrapbookingADM> lol
<scrapbookingADM> (well thats a given!)
<Melissa> LOL
<Joanna> to take your time. I'm not a big fan of hurrying. Often I go and dig up research. I
even call the library and ask questions to make sure I've got information right.
<Joanna> And, yeh, buying my book will keep me in HermaFIX for another week!/
<scrapbookingADM> sometimes scrapbookers get caught up in the "getting those pages done"
concept and miss out on some important steps in the process, I agree
<Melissa> But in today's society we're encouraged to have things "done". I get so much
satisfaction out of being caught up in my albums. I guess I've been missing out on the
journaling.
<Joanna> I mean, if your page says, "A good time was had by all," so WHAT?
<Joanna> Instead, tell me that one of your party guests pulled Chuck E Cheese's
<Melissa> Oh boy - I'm a journaling nightmare.
<Joanna> tail and it came off and he yelled at her and that's the really interesting stuff./
<scrapbookingADM> <smile> Melissa....we ALL have room for improvment in journaling
<Sandy> LOL that's not what I thought you were gonna say.
<Joanna> If you can participate here, you can journal. I suspect you are too worried about
it. I can improve, too, believe me./
<scrapbookingADM> any other questions ladies?
<LindajoyHOST> did I read there was another book coming?
<Melissa> I know what my problem is - I work on 4 albums at a time and I want to stay
updated. I shortchange in journaling because it is the most time consuming and difficult part
of the process.
<Joanna> Yes, it arrived on National Scrapbook Day. One Minute Journaling.
<Melissa> Where do we get your books, Joanna?
<Sandy> Doesn't have to be the most difficult, Melissa.
<Joanna> Melissa, ask your local scrapbook store to get them in. Otherwise you can go to
Barnes and Noble and any major bookstore.
<scrapbookingADM> the online bookstores carry them
<Melissa> I have a mind block over it, which makes it difficult. Thank you all for your
encouragement.
<Joanna> Melissa, I understand that pressure to get caught up, but why?
<Joanna> So you can clean toilets? I love having photos I consider them inventory.
<Melissa> I'm OCD and have back projects I want to work on.
<Laura> Joanna, can you give the address to get on your Story Starters mail list for those
not already on it?
<Melissa> LOL!
<scrapbookingADM> (<smile> thinking how great Joanna is!!!)
<Joanna> I have 14 boxes of them! And I love knowing they are waiting for me!
<Joanna> www.scrapbookstorytelling.com
<Sandy> Story Starters are GREAT!
<Laura> I am on the list and love it, and the others will surely want to join too
<Joanna> Great? Well, I don't know, but can I tell you a story? I had a painting conservator
come look at
<scrapbookingADM> that link is prominently displayed in her articles here on ABout
scrapbooking too if you need to find it later
<Melissa> I have 3 young kids and would just love to get projects completed. Maybe I'd better
go back to cross stitch.
<Joanna> a family portrait. We lifted off the back which had been duct-taped on and found a
tiny signature and the date 61, which means the portrait was done in 1861!!
<Melissa> WOW
<scrapbookingADM> cool
<Joanna> Now what if that artist hadn't taken the time to add the date? So few words can make
such a difference!
<Joanna> An "I love you" or a "Gosh, you are the neatest kid," can't be replaced. So when I
<Sandy> Melissa, folks won't enjoy that cross-stitch nearly as much as your albums.!!!!
<Joanna> write, I get really lofty and think how I'm securing my immortality! (I know that's
gushy.)/
<Melissa> Ok - I'm one of few words. I let the pictures tell the story. Maybe I need to focus
on what I have and maybe add feelings of the events or cute things said.
<Sandy> Gushy works here.
<Kathy> Joanna, my favorite tip from your book Quick and Easy Pages 2 is not
journaling-related, but rather it is the one about using a nail file or fine sandpaper to
round off circles and ovals that aren't quite smooth!
<Joanna> Cross-stitch is great, but what you write is more unique and personal.
<Melissa> I don't think it's gushy. People need to hear it.
<Joanna> Isn't that a good one? Here's a new one I just learned: Use a sheet of glass under
your paper when you cut out letters.
<Melissa> Wow - cool idea for the sandpaper.
<Joanna> I was having all sorts of trouble getting the letters smooth
<Kathy> Just think how much more time I'll have to journal instead of cutting down my circles
to the size of dimes!
<Joanna> then a friend told me about that and you know, my
<scrapbookingADM> you mean while using an exacto knife I presume
<scrapbookingADM> lol Kathy
<Joanna> craft knife was getting hung up on the cutting mat./
<Melissa> What does the glass do?
<Joanna> It makes a smooth surface so your cuts are smoother.
<Melissa> Rebecca, is there a way to retrieve chats? What I mean is, read them the next day?
<scrapbookingADM> yep I will post the transcripts of this chat
<Melissa> Thank you. THe child that had the tooth fairy visit was up too early today.
<scrapbookingADM> Joanna it was soooo awesome to have you here...we feel very priviledged to
get to quiz you in person
<LindajoyHOST> I learned so much tonight
<Breanne> ahhh! so wanna hear my new observation about scrapping?
<Joanna> Yes, ma'am.
<Breanne> scrapbooking and manicures dont mix :(
<Joanna> You are so right. I had my nails done for a tv segment and what a hassle./
<scrapbookingADM> lol
<Breanne> i got a manicure yesterday (2nd time in my life) and was scrapping all day..
needless to say, theres permanent marker and chipping all over
<Joanna> I could write so much faster and more correctly with short nails
<MaryCropper> I am sorry I didn't have any questions about journaling...I tend to ramble on
in my journaling! Everybody knows EVERYTHING in my books! LOL
<Joanna> Hey, wait until you stamp and get ink on your nails.
<scrapbookingADM> that is terrific Mary
<MaryCropper> Speaking of nails-Rebecca-how about yours young lady???
<scrapbookingADM> thats just what we have been talking about
<Laura> It's okay Mary, I didn't ask any questions either
<Breanne> Joanna - my nails are REALLY short... i bite em (nervous habit) ... but they look
cute when theyre manicured and it prevents me from biting
<scrapbookingADM> my nails are goreous!!! and tonight they are burgundy! I have been soo good
about them.
<Joanna> I used to bite mine, but my g'ma told me that they'd stick out my stomach
<LindajoyHOST> lol
<Breanne> Joanna - i was using some stamps- luckily none of that got on it
<Joanna> Rambling is okay. But after rambling go back and tighten up.
<scrapbookingADM> well Joanna....have I said lately that you are the greatest!!!
<Joanna> You can keep saying it! I need the encouragement!
<LindajoyHOST> I agree
<scrapbookingADM> We dont want to keep you too late. Any more questions ladies before Joanna
and I log off?
<LindajoyHOST> When are you coming back?
<Laura> yes, when?
<Joanna> (She's trying to protect me 'cause I'm an old lady.)
<Joanna> I'll come back whenever. I'm moving to the UK, but we can do it from there. Right?
<Joanna> We can have a virtual teaparty.
<LindajoyHOST> I hope you do return
<Laura> Jolly good!
<Joanna> Hugs to you all!
<LindajoyHOST> it was fun!!!!
<Laura> come back soon!
<LindajoyHOST> please
<scrapbookingADM> hugs Joanna....thank you so much, again! We will chat soon!
