Chat Transcripts Continued: Lisa Bearnson from Creating Keepsakes Magazine

From Thursday, November 14, 2002 10 p.m. EST

R: from breanne: What's the best point and shoot camera to get for taking everyday pictures? Which one do you use personally?

Lisa: I LOVE the Canon Z135 point and shoot camera.

R: What do you love about it? What should we look for when camera shopping?

Lisa: I get phenomenal results--looks like I took the pictures with an expensive SLR. Two things to look for in a camera:

1. Where you can turn on or off the flash (don't let the camera decide for you).
2. The strongest zoom possible so you can get in close to the action.

R: That was one of the great tips I picked up from your class in CKU SanAntonio - use a flash on bright sunny days if the sun is over head and creating shadows.

Lisa: Yes--I know it sounds strange but a flash fills in those unwanted shadows. Glad you listened, Rebecca!! What a great student!

R: Thanks! Next question - From Debbie: What is your favorite embellishment?

Lisa: My favorite embellishments are anything that looks like it took a lot of time to create but was already premade. For example ... Rebecca Sower Designs Fresh Cuts, Westrim's Paper Bliss, Colorboks Doo Dads (new), and O'Scrap's Sampler cutouts (also new). We spotlight some of these products (3-D Delights) in the January 2003 issue. Also, Provo Craft's coming up with a cool new product line in January along the lines I just talked about.

R: Cool! I can't wait to see them! Ok Lisa...the hot question from many, many scrapbookers here tonight and on the forum is...Will CK be adding more CKU sites to the program next year? Or other locations in future years? Etc.

Lisa: Unfortunately we limit the CKU's to four a year for the consumer (we'll have one in Orlando for the retailer in June).

R: From gottascrap: How many people typically submit for contests? Is it easier to get published by just sending in a layout or by entering contests?

Lisa: It depends on the contest. Hall of Fame is our most popular--we got around three thousand submissions. We look at all submissions in the same light whether they are from contests or sent directly to us. We are looking for the criteria I mentioned above.

R: Wow! On that theme... From Jenn: Is CK planning on doing any wedding related topics in upcoming issues?

Lisa: We have an idea book coming out in the Spring of 2003 on Wedding layouts. Also, a fun article called "Creative Wedding Proposals" coming in March 2003. Also, check out our June 2002 issue for an article called "To Have and to Hold."

R: From Janette - Hi! What are some common household things that you have used in your scrapbooks?

Lisa: I'm a very traditional scrapbooker--I typically use items made for scrapbooks. But, a few crazy items ... Sandpaper, twine, and lots of memorabilia that I've collected from around the globe (sprayed with Archival Mist, of course). :)

R: How about: From Francine – Do you have a preference on the type of journaling--handwritten over computer generated?

Lisa: I write on the majority of my pages--I want my children to know what my handwriting looked like and to read it as if I were there. I also prefer the plainer fonts for my journaling--I love CK's new Fresh Fonts CD. Totally my style!

R: Here's one that is relevant to the ratio of men to women in this room...From Sonja - Any idea what percentage of scrapbookers are men?

Lisa: Ninety-nine percent are women. To those 1% of men, it's the most worthwhile hobby ever and your posterity will love you for it!

R: Several questions from your Australian fan club...but the most prevalent one is...Can Aussie's enter the Hall Of Fame contest?

Editors Note: Due to new information that was brought to light, Lisa's answer to this question is different from the answer given during the chat. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

Lisa: Aussie's are some of the most talented gals I know. Unfortunately, due to extensive legal restrictions, we cannot accept entries from scrapbookers outside the United States, Canada (excluding Quebec), England and Wales. We have put a lot of time and effort into making the contest available to Australians but face too many legal obstacles at this time. We'll keep working at it, though! We're some of your biggest fans.

R: Yeah! They are all cheering quietly I am sure.

R: Speaking of submissions: From OakApr: Lisa, I have always wondered how much you have to worry about copyrighted items included in the layouts people submit to your magazine to be published. For example, I occasionally like to include postcards, professional photographs, printed material from places I visit etc. in my scrapbook pages. Would you have a problem publishing a layout I have created that includes something of this nature?

Lisa: That's a tough one ...Basically, many of the items you purchase as memorabilia are fine to include because your use is not for commercial purposes. But ... Professional photographs generally have copyright restrictions and require written permission from the photographer before being published.

R: Lisa an hour has just FLOWN by...we have all so loved having you here! We hope you can come again sometime! One last kind of fun question was submitted by "Snoopy" - Is there a question that you wished had been asked because you just wanted to share something with us? And, of course, what is the answer to that question?

Lisa: As a busy mom, I too get overwhelmed with the mounds of photos that seem to be piling up and the lack of time to scrapbook them all. Our editorial staff is aware of the need to speed up the process and empower you (and me) to create incredible pages faster. Look for lots of timesaving tips in future issues. Also, the January cover story is my favorite ...It shows how to create a scrapbook starring YOU!! And it's really easy--just one layout a month!

Lisa: Loved chatting with you all. Sweet dreams ... May eyelets and brads dance in your heads!

Rebecca: Thanks again Lisa!!!!! You were awesome!
