Date: February 22

Special Guest Speaker: Kimberly Powell, About's Guide to Genealogy

new2scrappin We recently found tons of pictures and letters from the 1800's that were my dh great grandmothers. Am interested in doing a book of them. They are on hard cardboard. Would you suggest copying them??
scrapbookingADM everyone this is Kimberly the Genealogy guide for About.com...our guest for tonight
scrapbookingADM that question can be for you Kimberly
KimberlyGenealogy Yes, if you can afford it I would suggest having professional copies made
Lilybell Hello, I finally made it
KimberlyGenealogy They can even restore scratches, etc in the process
scrapbookingADM where do you have that done at Kimberly?
Linda glad you could
KimberlyGenealogy And it makes for a better scrapbook :-)
new2scrappin we scanned them and put them on a cd...
KimberlyGenealogy That works as well - you can print them out on photo paper
scrapbookingADM thats a great way to save them digitally, new2
KimberlyGenealogy If you have a good photo printer
KimberlyGenealogy And digital is the best way to preserve old photos because no matter what you do they will continue to deteriorate
new2scrappin ours isn't great.... where could we have them done?
KimberlyGenealogy Digital will last forever
KimberlyGenealogy There are a few options
KimberlyGenealogy You can take them to one of those Kodak photo machines
KimberlyGenealogy They do a pretty good job
breanne ooh - those machines are fun!
scrapbookingADM lol breanne
Lilybell What digital camera do you guys recommend?
Linda Are you talking about taking pics of pics?
KimberlyGenealogy Any photo shop can also make negatives from your pictures and then make reprints
new2scrappin i will have to try that! thanks!
breanne i was in the CVS for 4 hrs. one day getting 7 rolls of film developed and using the machine :)
KimberlyGenealogy Or you can go to a professional who specializes in photo restoration
KimberlyGenealogy The machine is the best option if you only want to make one set of prints
Linda digital is forever?
new2scrappin how would you find a professional?
KimberlyGenealogy Having negatives made is more expensive, but is also the better option if you want to make lots of copies for family members
KimberlyGenealogy Because then the reprints are cheaper
............................ AnnaP joined.............
breanne hey Anna
Linda Hi Anna
scrapbookingADM she means saved perpetually on a CD and copied constantly onto changing technology over time....not printed out, Linda
KimberlyGenealogy I have a few experts listed on my site
scrapbookingADM hey Anna....welcome
Linda oh good!!
KimberlyGenealogy Or you can look in your yellow pages
Lilybell Hi, Anne
new2scrappin ok, i am on your site to and a newbie!
KimberlyGenealogy They should say that they are restoration experts
AnnaP Hi everyone!
KimberlyGenealogy Glad to have you!
KimberlyGenealogy Rebecca - did you figure out the transcript thing?
scrapbookingADM yep its running
scrapbookingADM <smile>
KimberlyGenealogy I've had a request from someone who loves your site but couldn't make it tonight
scrapbookingADM oh cool
Linda Dear Rebecca
KimberlyGenealogy Because they are having a scrapbooking party
Linda Could you do the font size thingy
scrapbookingADM yep.....type *chat fontsize 14
scrapbookingADM remember all the * is important and so is the spacing
Linda Thank you
KimberlyGenealogy Oh - I sure wish they would change the default fontsize and color in our chat rooms!
scrapbookingADM np
scrapbookingADM yep me too
Linda I missed a space
scrapbookingADM so Linda are you working on Heritage albums?
Linda always
KimberlyGenealogy That's great!
Linda that means I am always sorting, looking for info, idea and scrapping
............................ maschultz joined.............

Linda I do have lot done
scrapbookingADM yeah.....everyone.....maschultz....is my Mom....welcome mom ...hugggs

KimberlyGenealogy Hi Rebecca's Mom :-)
Lilybell Hi, mom
maschultz Hi Bec, Hi Kimberly
Linda I am not very knowledgeable
breanne hi rebecca's mommy!!
scrapbookingADM Kimberly....Mom is working on our family's genealogy....tell us how far back you have gotten, Mom
AnnaP Hi
maschultz Hi Breanne
Linda I am going to start kimberly's class this wek
KimberlyGenealogy Yay Linda :-)
scrapbookingADM cool Linda thats great
maschultz I've gotten back to the 1500s on a couple of the branches.
new2scrappin wow!
Linda very nice
KimberlyGenealogy That is excellent!!
AnnaP wow, that's a long way back!
KimberlyGenealogy What countries?
scrapbookingADM isn't she great? <smile>
breanne <smiles> like mother, like daughter
KimberlyGenealogy the proud daughter ...
maschultz England, Germany are the ones that go back that far
Linda Our one line goes back almost that far, but we are mising a link
scrapbookingADM lol
............................ amber1432 left.............
Linda That is great mom
scrapbookingADM Kimberly I have heard that a lot of people get stuck about there...due to the scarcity of written records???
Linda How long have you been working?
KimberlyGenealogy Linda - meaning that you think it goes back that far but you haven't found the proof to connect to the previous research?
KimberlyGenealogy Yes, it is hard to get past the 1500s
KimberlyGenealogy It usually takes church records or previous genealogies to get back that far
AnnaP My aunty is researching our family tree, but she's only got as far back as the late 1700s, in England and Scotland
KimberlyGenealogy And there are few surviving church records from the 15th century
maschultz I have found that connecting to other geneologists on the internet through rootsweb has really helped me.
Lilybell What is rootsweb?
KimberlyGenealogy Anna - she will probably have a chance to go back further using church records
Linda Kimberly, there is a wonderful person who has a website for our name and she has it back that far to England,
scrapbookingADM and she likes your site Kimberly (she mentioned it to me earlier today)
KimberlyGenealogy But that research is hard to do without visiting personally
KimberlyGenealogy Rootsweb is a large genealogy site owned by MyFamily.com
KimberlyGenealogy It is run by volunteers
KimberlyGenealogy and has Web sites for countries around the world
AnnaP She visited England last year and looked at some church records, which helped get a bit further, but a lot were destroyed in a church fire.
Linda Our side is done too. we connect but there is someone missing
KimberlyGenealogy Plus hundreds of mailing lists
KimberlyGenealogy And WorldConnect which is a way to post your family tree and search for others with info on your surnames
scrapbookingADM wow Anna...that is really cool that she was able to visit and do the research even if it wasnt as extensive as hoped

Linda That's cool Anna
scrapbookingADM welcome BC and Reanie
Reanie hello rebecca
AnnaP Well, she was in England touring, so she spent some time researching too
KimberlyGenealogy Anna- with all of the Wars, especially, it takes good luck to get back into pre-1700
Linda HI BC
Linda Hi reanie
KimberlyGenealogy So many records have been destroyed
scrapbookingADM Kimberly the Genealogy guide is here to answer any Heritage scrapbooking or genealogy questions we may have for her.
Reanie hi Linda....
KimberlyGenealogy I am actually amazed that you got back that far in Germany maschultz
Linda glad you guys are here
............................ Cristy joined.............
KimberlyGenealogy So many records were destroyed by bombing in WWII
Reanie If you dont mind, I am going to just lurk...
Linda Hi Cristy
Cristy Good evening all
scrapbookingADM hi Cristy
Linda It is hard to follow
AnnaP Hi cristy
Reanie I havent even thought Bout doing that kind of a book
Linda So much good info
Cristy Hi rebecca, Linda and Anna.
Linda You will
Reanie so I am ready for ideas'
KimberlyGenealogy Linda - I'm glad to know that your contact likes my site :)
breanne <laughs> im with you, Reanie
Cristy Anna its about lunch time there isn't it?
maschultz I was lucky. It turned out that a large group of settlers came to the US and settled in Virginia in the 1700's. They had the records and kept them updated.
scrapbookingADM the transcripts of this chat will be posted on my site for you to read again later for future reference
Linda Kimberly, not me
Linda thank Rebecca
scrapbookingADM wow thats cool, Mom
AnnaP I have some photos of my dh as a baby. He's now 32. Does that count as heritage? Probably not. LOL
BCBoop TypeHi, all. I'll 'listen' for a while.
breanne hehe @ Anna
Linda Kimberly, I love your site
KimberlyGenealogy I got lost in all of the chatter <grin>
scrapbookingADM yep, Anna....that is your children's heritage <smile>
Cristy I have a question about old pictures
KimberlyGenealogy Anna - everything is heritage in my book
............................ Kit left.............
............................ kit joined.............
Linda good way to look at it
scrapbookingADM go ahead Cristy
KimberlyGenealogy You were lucky maschultz - that is wonderful!
Reanie yes it is !!
AnnaP Well I guess I might start some heritage pics when I get up to date, then.
Linda Rebecca is so lucky
Linda That's great Anna
Reanie by the time iget done , my pics will be heritage lol
scrapbookingADM (I am especially lucky cause Mom is scrapbooking the info too)
Cristy My dad recived a family history album as a 50th Bday gift. It traced his family back 150 years.
Linda lol
Linda that is great
KimberlyGenealogy What a great birthday gift!
maschultz Rebecca is even luckier than you think. Her dad and sister and reading this chat with me
Cristy The only problem, is most of hte old pictures were pictures of pictures of pictures then copied, so they are grainy and blurry
Linda Hi dad & sis
AnnaP That would be a great present to get - what interesting reading!
scrapbookingADM lol...and that makes me lucky?
scrapbookingADM ohhh I see Cristy
KimberlyGenealogy Cristy - I'm sure someone in the family must have the original photos though
Cristy I want to srap them but they aren't really good pictures, plus I would have to copy them again, making it even worse
KimberlyGenealogy Have you tried contacting the person who made the album for your father?
kit I gave my husband an album covering 25 yrs of marriage for our anniversary....does that count as heritage?? LOLt
KimberlyGenealogy That's the #1 step in genealogy
KimberlyGenealogy Start at home - with your family
KimberlyGenealogy and your relatives
Cristy She said all her's were copies (they are all old family. My dad is the baby in the family and he is 65
KimberlyGenealogy Too many people skip that step
AnnaP We have photos of my granfather's family - my aunty has originals and my mum has colour copies
KimberlyGenealogy Cristy - someone in the family must have them
Lilybell My sister-in-law has all the info and pictures for my husbands side. She isn't sharing ! She has offered to let us get prints. Do you suggest we be happy with that or fight for some of the real thing?
KimberlyGenealogy Sounds like you need to start making contact with cousins and other descendants
maschultz Kimberly, do you have a source for a good list of questions to send to relatives to jog their memories?
KimberlyGenealogy Lilybell - I would start by taking her up on her offer to make prints
scrapbookingADM lol....do you suggest they "fight" Kimberly?
Cristy It would have o be one of my aunts and two of them live here in MI and one just moved
KimberlyGenealogy That's better than nothing
KimberlyGenealogy Sure do maschultz - just a sec and I'll get you a URL
BCBoop I feel very lucky that someone researched and wrote and published the story of my father's mother. It was no easy task, with a name like Jones.
Lilybell Guess you are right. But there are so many that it just burns me.
KimberlyGenealogy http://genealogy.about.com/cs/oralhistory/
scrapbookingADM lol...true BC...that is great
Reanie our family isnt close at all so I dont know much about anything to be honest
KimberlyGenealogy Has advice on questioning family members
KimberlyGenealogy and links to sites with tons of great questions
scrapbookingADM Mom do you know you can click surf and it opens a new window for you?
new2scrappin we know nothing about my dh great grandfather except the pictures and letters found. They say where he lived. We don't know where buried or anything. any suggestions?
maschultz Jenny just told me
KimberlyGenealogy do you know where he lived new2?
KimberlyGenealogy And what time period?
Reanie hey.... I will be back in a while my daughter needs me i guess lol
............................ Reanie left.............
AnnaP going to check out the forums for a few minutes. Be back soon
............................ AnnaP left.............
new2scrappin we know where he was in 1875, but he apparently died or something and the grandmother remarried and know one ever knew about it. Found the letters so really interested in finding out.
KimberlyGenealogy You could start by looking for him in the 1870 census
KimberlyGenealogy That would provide you with his place of birth and his age
Cristy I had a chance to read my great great grandfathers journal / diary from when he was in the civil war and when he came up to Michigan and settled the city I grew up in
KimberlyGenealogy I would also look for information on the grandmother's second marriage
scrapbookingADM how do you do that, Kim.....beginner question I know..but I have no clue
KimberlyGenealogy as it may help you to narrow down a time period or location for his death
new2scrappin that would be great. I am going to have to go to our local genealogy club and find out how to do it!
KimberlyGenealogy I'm jealous Cristy!!!!!!
scrapbookingADM thats wonderful Cristy
KimberlyGenealogy My family seems to have not kept any interesting things like that
KimberlyGenealogy I have a ton of Civil War ancestors
scrapbookingADM how do you find the 1870 census, Kimberly?
KimberlyGenealogy But the closest I have to mementos are pension records
Cristy Well he settled the city I grewup in so I had to research something serious up in Lansing State Archives but we came across the journal in some old papers my aunt had
KimberlyGenealogy new2 - you can learn how to use census records on my site too!
KimberlyGenealogy If you live in the area you are researching you can find census records at area libraries with genealogy sections
new2scrappin i will check it out. I just signed up to this site and yours!
new2scrappin I dont live far!
............................ karinasmum joined.............
Linda she explains things very clearly on her site
KimberlyGenealogy If you do not live in the state you are researching then you can access census records through your local Family History Center
Linda Hi Leonie
scrapbookingADM hey karinasmum (aka Leonie)....welcome
karinasmum Type HEREHi
KimberlyGenealogy new2 - then your genealogy club will be able to tell you where you can get access to the 1870 census
scrapbookingADM Kimberly....Leonie is one of our Australian scrappers
BCBoop What you are trying to do, new2, will be greatly appreciated by your famity.

new2scrappin they meet once and month and i just missed them!!!
KimberlyGenealogy A Family History Center is a branch of the Mormon Family History Library in Salt Lake City
KimberlyGenealogy And they exist in most major US cities and in other cities around the world
KimberlyGenealogy Hi Leonie!
............................ kit left.............
karinasmum Hi Kimberly
KimberlyGenealogy new2 - what state? county?
karinasmum They have a centre near me too
scrapbookingADM Kimberly tell us about your online classes
Cristy Hey Breanne sorry to hear you package didn't arrive
new2scrappin Thanks, BCBoop! It is really interesting especially since we found the pictures!
KimberlyGenealogy Online classes...hum...
breanne hey Christy - lol - thanks :) i wasnt really looking at the chat!! oops!
KimberlyGenealogy I started a new experiment three weeks ago on my site
new2scrappin Arkansas, not sure what county. Lake City, Arkansas
KimberlyGenealogy It is an interactive classroom where I teach free online genealogy classes
karinasmum sounds good Kimberly
KimberlyGenealogy The first class is a 6 week Introduction to Genealogy
KimberlyGenealogy I have tried my best not to make it too US centric because I have people from all over the world who use my site
new2scrappin When are your classes??
maschultz Are the classes done in a chat setting
KimberlyGenealogy And so many of the other big genealogy sites concentrate primarily on US
scrapbookingADM <nodding>...About has a very international audience
KimberlyGenealogy The classes include a weekly lesson, a weekly assignment and a quiz
KimberlyGenealogy Which are all done on your own time schedule
KimberlyGenealogy The classroom itself is in a forum
karinasmum a quiz! its hard enough with my own tricky bits without a quiz
KimberlyGenealogy Which is separate from my main genealogy forum and is solely for people who are taking the classes
KimberlyGenealogy I post assignments etc in the forum
BCBoop We have a large geneology section in the Ft Worth Library.
Lilybell How do you get to the classes?
KimberlyGenealogy People post their assignments (which are optional Leonie)
maschultz So you can start the classes at any time right?
KimberlyGenealogy And I make comments about people's assignments and answer questions, etc
KimberlyGenealogy Yes, you can start the classes at any time
karinasmum Kimberly, would your forum be able to help me with my stuck list
KimberlyGenealogy We are going into the 4th week of a 6 week class so you will have some catching up to do!
KimberlyGenealogy I will also offer the class again in the future as well as offering a variety of other classes
Linda I have to say that i think this is a great idea!\
karinasmum me too
new2scrappin sounds good1
KimberlyGenealogy Leonie - I have a brick wall folder in my forum as well as a folder for posting surnames
KimberlyGenealogy Thanks - it has been a lot of fun and I have over 200 people taking my first class!
KimberlyGenealogy You can get to it from my site's homepage
karinasmum Youll be seeing me there soon, then. Rebecca has been hogging my internet time but she may have to share it!
KimberlyGenealogy http://genealogy.about.com
scrapbookingADM lol.....sigh
KimberlyGenealogy Rebecca - hey, I share my people with you :-)
scrapbookingADM I plugged my site for an hour in Kimberly's chat a couple weeks ago.....lol
Linda I saw how she was talking to people about their homework. It was just like the board here.
scrapbookingADM she has a fabulous site....we indeed share a lot of readers
KimberlyGenealogy Yes - I have a main board just like Rebecca does
KimberlyGenealogy And then I have a separate one called "Lets Learn Genealogy" where I hold the classes
Linda where are they?
KimberlyGenealogy Thanks Rebecca *blush*
new2scrappin i read the chat with Rebecca on your site!
KimberlyGenealogy Main form is http://genealogy.about.com/ab-genealogy/
scrapbookingADM I cant figure out how to teach scrapbooking in a forum setting but I am thinking about it
KimberlyGenealogy Or you can get to it from my site's homepage, same as you do with Rebeccas
KimberlyGenealogy If I can teach genealogy, then you can teach scrapbooking
Linda Rebecca, I think you are doing a wonderful job teaching people
KimberlyGenealogy I'll help with ideas :-)
scrapbookingADM my turn to *blush* thanks Linda....Linda is going to be my chat and forum host, Kim
scrapbookingADM <---always borrowing ideas from Kimberly
KimberlyGenealogy Congrats Linda!
Linda Watch out-Kimberly might steal me!!!!lol
KimberlyGenealogy LOL Linda - I was just thinking that...
karinasmum When is this, LInda
maschultz Kimberly, have you put your family tree information into a heritage album?
KimberlyGenealogy Shhh - don't tell Rebecca
scrapbookingADM she gets a specially made About Scrapbooking embroidered polo shirt...lol...just try and top that Kimberly...<smile>
KimberlyGenealogy Nope - you've got me there maschultz
............................ Lindaj joined.............
KimberlyGenealogy I'm still trying to get the current pics in albums
KimberlyGenealogy And haven't made it to the older photos
breanne ooooh how neat :) <smiles> i keep scanning the convo :)
scrapbookingADM <shaking my head> we're still working on her Mom
Lindaj I booted myself
KimberlyGenealogy I am scanning them all onto CDs
scrapbookingADM wb Linda
KimberlyGenealogy I also have a large majority of them on load
KimberlyGenealogy loan
KimberlyGenealogy I come from family with lots of descendants and I have to share
KimberlyGenealogy So I have to get reprints made for a scrapbook
KimberlyGenealogy I have created a few Family History books though
KimberlyGenealogy Just simple ones for family reunions and the like
KimberlyGenealogy With photos and letters and family tree info, etc
Lilybell What is the best way to get reprints done?
KimberlyGenealogy If you only want to make one set to scrapbook with then the Kodak photo machines are the best option
maschultz I would like to do a family history book but need a way to get started.
KimberlyGenealogy Assuming the photos are old enough that there are no negatives
............................ Linda left.............
scrapbookingADM there you go Linda..theres only one of you again
KimberlyGenealogy maschultz - do you use a genealogy software program?
Lilybell OK, Thanks!!!!!
KimberlyGenealogy Lilybell - if you have old photos which are torn or scratched then you can either have them reprinted/restored professionally
KimberlyGenealogy Or if you are good with a computer graphics program you can scan them in and do it yourself
maschultz Yes, I have a Family Tree Maker and I know that it has the capability, but haven't printed a book yet.
............................ polly joined.............

Lindaj I have a sb made by my Gr. Aunt in college
breanne polly - nope - it was delayed til tomorrow
KimberlyGenealogy I love questions <g>
Lindaj 1916 app.
Lindaj It has buggies a bit
polly Gosh darnit! I wanted to hear what you got
KimberlyGenealogy That's a wonderful treasure
scrapbookingADM buggies?
Lindaj How do I remove the bugs?
Lindaj They haven't eaten anything
KimberlyGenealogy good question!
scrapbookingADM ewww...Kimberly....how do you remove the bugs?
Lindaj they are tiny
Lindaj and just afew
Lindaj been there for 30 yrs
KimberlyGenealogy Rebecca - sounds like a scrapbooking question to me!!!
KimberlyGenealogy LOL
Lindaj lol
scrapbookingADM what about sealing the album in an airtight container like a big ziplock bag
scrapbookingADM till they die
Lindaj I am going to remove the items and redo exactly in a new album
scrapbookingADM (sounds so vicious)
Lindaj it is 12x 15
KimberlyGenealogy That should probably take care of the problem Linda
Lindaj a trah bag?
KimberlyGenealogy making a new album that is
Lindaj I think they are dead
scrapbookingADM thats what I would do Linda....because the paper most likely isnt acid free
scrapbookingADM yeah a trash bag
polly One of my relatives was a witch burnt at the stake in Salem, her name was Polly too-my dd thinks that is so neat, I don;t think it is LOL
KimberlyGenealogy Make sure if you use a bag that it is in a location where it can't possibly pick up condensation
scrapbookingADM lol Polly
scrapbookingADM true
KimberlyGenealogy It's bad for the photos to not be able to breathe
Lindaj one last ?
scrapbookingADM hmmm if they are dead
scrapbookingADM then just rescrap when you can
Lindaj ther is a pic of her a one of the Wright bros
breanne well, imma go to sleep - not sure if i have school yet tomorrow ;)
KimberlyGenealogy WOW!!
Lindaj it was in Dayton
scrapbookingADM nite ((((((breanne)))))))
KimberlyGenealogy My husband would be jealous
new2scrappin what about putting photos in a plastic box? is that ok?
polly Linda--how neat
KimberlyGenealogy I'd better not tell him
Lindaj I would like to verify
scrapbookingADM cool Linda
Lindaj should I use a biography or go gen
breanne bye! nite! ill keep y'all posted tomorrow on the package
Lindaj bye bre
KimberlyGenealogy You want to verify the man in the photo is one of the wright brothers?
Lindaj yes
Lindaj she wrote it
KimberlyGenealogy Or verify that you are related to one of the wright brothers
Lindaj not related
............................ breanne left.............
scrapbookingADM usually photo storage boxes are cardboard new2 and for long term storage you dont want it to be airtight as Kimberly said....(only short term to kill bugs <smile>)
Lindaj just that he was in the area at the time
KimberlyGenealogy Then I would probably just study as many biographies as I could find
Lindaj thanks, I will
KimberlyGenealogy Look for photos to compare
KimberlyGenealogy esp ones taken around the same time period
Lindaj I will
KimberlyGenealogy Is there a date on the photo?
Lindaj I think
scrapbookingADM that sounds like a fun project Linda!
Lindaj if not the book was all from a certain period
Lindaj It is in a box
Lindaj away from my other stuff
KimberlyGenealogy If you can verify that the photo was taken at a certain place and time
KimberlyGenealogy Then you can also verify that it would have been possible
Lindaj at a colege
KimberlyGenealogy Does that make sense?
Lindaj yes
Lindaj thanks
Lindaj i thought it would be neat
KimberlyGenealogy Then you should be able to verify that the Wright Bros were at that college during that time period
Lindaj yes
KimberlyGenealogy I'm sure their entire life is documented somewhere :-)
KimberlyGenealogy Very neat - my husband would kill to have a photo like that
Lindaj I'm sure
polly try a search on the internet for them Linda
KimberlyGenealogy He's a big aviation buff
Lindaj if it is, I can send him a copy
Lindaj good idea polly
Lindaj Luckily it is the same size as a cm 12 x15
