The Inheritance Album

Manufactured by Stone Editions and available through Flax Art & Design

For scrapbookers who are looking for the finest quality materials to preserve their family history, these albums meet the highest standards. The binding is flexible allowing the pages to lay nearly flat when open and providing stress free page turning. This type of binding is actually much stronger than strap-hinge or post bound bindings. Also, these nylon sewn bindings provide a known thickness that the finished album will reach, therefore each can be accompanied by a photo safe slip-cover which protects the album from light and dust.

The pages of this album are, however, what make it truly unique. They are "100% cotton fiber archival paper formulated specially for image and document preservation," according to Stone Editions. They are thick card stock pages that have been designed for long term photographic enclosure. Just feeling the pages of this album makes you appreciate the quality of the materials used to create it.  The rigid standards used in the construction of these albums allows the manufacturer to give it an estimated life expectancy of 500 years!

I was truly impressed, as you can probably tell, by the feel and quality of  The Inheritance Album. My chief concern with book bound albums in general is the ability of the album to gracefully expand as pictures and documents are added to its bulk. This is handled by this impressive scrapbook by having every other page perforated near the binding for removal. As you put together your album, you remove the perforated pages leaving room between the remaining pages for your pictures and memorabilia. Of course, you will save these pages that you remove (which are the finest quality paper to be found in an album) for future scrapbooking projects. The dimensions of the pages are 10 1/2 x 12" creating a two-page spread of 21" x 12".

The manufacturer suggests a simple but elegant style of scrapbooking your heirloom photographs that is based on the use of  self-adhesive mounting sleeves. Available in 5 sizes, these sleeves provide perfect adhesive-free, mounted protection for your photos. You simply slip each photo into its own sleeve, peel off the backing tape, and apply to the page. Adding your journaling and important documentation completes the pages. A booklet titled "Making an Inheritance Album" is included with each album and details the steps suggested for completing this treasured project.

The Inheritance Album is available from Flax Art & Design, retailing for $98.00. The prices for the mounting sleeves vary based on size. Colors available include: Jade, Ruby, Obsidian, or Sandstone. For more information and ordering, please visit the Flax Art: Collage web site.
