Mini-Books for Scrapbook Pages

A Creative Way to Add Extra Pictures to Your Layouts
by Jennifer Schmidt for About.com Scrapbooking

Sometimes you have more photos than you can fit on a layout. Many of these pages would be just fine if you used only a few, select photos that tell the story you are trying to express on the scrapbook page. There are some pages, however, that need lots of photos to tell the whole story. In the layout below, Jennifer wanted to include the photos from the several ultrasounds that she had during her pregnancy. She didn't want to devote page after page in her album to these pictures however, so she created a mini-book to hold all of the extra photos on the page. Here she shares with us the step-by-step instructions for making the mini-book and includes a sample of how the book can make a great stand-alone gift for a special family member or friend.

Sample Layout:

Note below that the mini-book in the lower left corner of the layout opens to reveal several more pages of photos.

Supplies Needed for the Mini-book:

1 outside cover paper (printed or solid, paper or cardstock) -- 10 1/2" x 7"
2 pieces of chipboard (light weight cardboard - can even use empty cereal boxes) -- 6" x 4 1/2"
6 inside pages (white cardstock) -- 8 1/2" x 5 1/2"
Glue stick or non-wrinkling liquid adhesive

Cover:

Glue the two chipboard pieces onto the back of cover paper, leaving a 1/2" boarder around and 1/2" between chipboard pieces. Cut corners off of cover paper making four tabs (see photo below). Glue and fold tabs onto chipboard.

Inside:

Fold 6 inside papers in half like making a card. Glue folded pages together back to back with folded edges together to form the pages of the book.

Putting It Together:

Glue pages to outside cover on one side lining up the folded edges of the pages with the inside edge of the chipboard. Add adhesive to the top of the pages and bring cover over to line up and adhere.

Finishing Touches:

Let dry and decorate. Once the book has dried, you can now add it to your scrapbook page and insert photos, journaling, and embellishments.

Mini Gift Albums:

Try creating extra books to use as gifts for family and friends. Below is an example of a mini-scrapbook gift album. Ribbon was added before the pages were glued inside the cover to give the book a decorative closure.
