Technique Challenge: Oversized Photo Mat Borders

A Quick and Easy Way to Embellish Your Scrapbook Pages
by Your Guide to Scrapbooking Rebecca Ludens

Repetition is a graphic design technique that is pleasing to the eye and simple to produce. Simply by repeating an embellishment or pattern across a layout you create a unified whole that presents the story that you are telling with your photos and journaling in a pleasing fashion. An easy way to add a repeating border to a page is with over-sized photo mat borders. In the sample page above, the pattern from the photo mats was also mimicked in the journaling box, pulling the whole layout together. For tips on making photo mat borders read the How To below and check out the additional samples below!

Materials Used in sample pages above: Celebration printed cardstock and coordinating solids from Club Scrap, swirl punch by EK Success, flower embellishments from Jolee's Boutique sticker line, title die cuts - Sizzix Fun Serif Upper and Lower, and DIY Logo and scissors my own design inspired by the DIY Scrapbooking television studio set in photos.

How To:

Step 1) Mat your photos on solid colored cardstock level an 1/8" border all the way around the photo.

Step 2) Double mat the photos by creating a mat that is approximately 1" larger on one side than the first mat.

Step 3) Embellish the protruding second mat as desired to compliment the photos and the layout.

Step 4) Repeat the embellishments and patterns on other photos, the title, and/or journaling box to complete the layout.

Sample Project With Oversized Mats:

Materials Needed:

Instructions: Use wire to make the title word "Party." Use small additional pieces of wire to attach the wire word to the white background cardstock. Mount white cardstock to teal colored mat which is cut approximately 1" larger than the white cardstock background. Use Mini GlueDots to adhere the small punchies to the title topper in any pattern you desire. The finished topper is a fabulous embellishment for birthday and celebration pages!
