Paper Piecing Pattern for Scrapbookers |
Cuddle
up with Snowbird Sammy! He only looks cold, he has a warm heart with a soft spot
for his feathered friends. I created the Snowbird Sammy pattern as a gift for
the wonderful friends I've made on the About
Scrapbooking Forum. Follow these simple steps and Snowbird Sammy will grace
your scrapbook pages from his endearing crooked smile to his softly folded
scarf. My patterns are numbered, this allows you to track all of the pattern
pieces. Remember to cut out all of the pieces, then by following the numbers as
you construct the finished project even patterns that appear to be complex are
easy to create.
Supplies:
- 1 Small eyelet (green)
- Cardstock scraps: white, black, red, holly green, brown, orange and a cheerful
print for his scarf
- Chalk Colors Used: white, light blue, black and pink
- 6 inches of green wire
- 2 pop dots cut in half
- tiny Christmas bulb or ornament stickers (Stickopotmas used in sample)
Pens Used for Detailing: Silver gel pen, black .05 journaling pen
Assembly Instructions:
If you are new to paper piecing start at Step 1., if you have experience with paper piecing proceed to Step 3.
Step 1. Always make a copy of the original pattern. Store your original pattern for future use.
Step 2. There are many ways to trace and cut out your pattern pieces, the most fool proof way is to cut out your pattern pieces out, flip them to the reverse side and trace them on your cardstock. You may want to write the pattern number on the back of each piece. I don't recommend cutting the pieces out until you've added your pen detailing and are ready to assemble the piece. The larger the piece of paper is the easier it is to add details.
Step 3. Add Pen Details to following pattern pieces (pattern #):
- Black pen details to the buttons on the body (ss1), eyes and smile on the face(SS4), the lines on the birdhouse (SS10)and socks(SS12).
- Add silver gel pen details to the boots(ss13)and shoelaces.
Step 4. Cut out your pieces and chalk according to the pattern.
Hint: Chalking white cardstock pieces in light blue creates dimension to suggest the look of snow. Chalking black cardstock pieces in white chalk not only adds an aged look but simulates snow on the boots and the hat. The birdhouse (SS11), scarf (SS8 & 9) and the tree (ss14) are chalked in black.
Step 5. Assemble your pieces in numerical order, use a `wet' adhesive such as a glue pen to adhere them together.
Step 6. Scarf Assembly - the scarf is in two pieces and each piece has two dotted lines on the pattern to indicate where the folds should be made to give the scarf a 3-D look. When you fold the scarf, adhere the fold to the body with a half of a pop dot. The scarf ends should be adhered to the body with wet adhesive.
Step 7. Arms Assembly - Sammy's arms (ss3) are all one piece on the pattern with two black mittens for hands. After cutting and chalking the arms, center the mittens over the hands and glue in place.
Step 8. Cut two holly leaves and punch three red berries for the hat (Sample used pre-printed holly paper). Put an eyelet in the birdhouse and add the wire to hang the birdhouse from Sammy's hand.
Step 9. Wrap the wire around the Christmas tree and add the stickers. Secure the wire with double sided tape on the back of the tree.
You can adjust Sammy's height by lowering his body on his legs. Remember Snowmen don't have to have perfect proportions. The finished piece in the illustration is almost 9 inches tall. Enjoy and cuddle up!
