Simple Scrapbooks: Creating a Family "Cookie Contest" Scrapbook

by Gayle Humpherys

Need a family reunion idea that’s easy, fun and sure to be a big hit? Host a cookie contest! Family members of all ages are bound to enjoy this activity of tasting and sharing, and you can make it even more memorable by creating a small scrapbook of photos and cookie recipes. You’ll not only have a great reunion keepsake for each family to take home, but a collection of favorite recipes at the same time!

Stacy Julian, editor-in-chief of Simple Scrapbooks magazine, created just such a cookie scrapbook at a recent family reunion. Stacy loves this quick-and-easy scrapbooking idea for three reasons: it gives you a picture of just about everyone in attendance, it’s a great way to commemorate the reunion, and it helps connect your family with shared recipes. Follow these simple guidelines to create your own cookie contest scrapbook.

Getting Ready

Before the reunion, ask each individual family to submit three or four favorite cookie recipes along with a little background, such as where the recipes came from or whose favorites they are. Gather enough small albums for each family to take one home—a half-size album (5.5" x 8.5") works great. Create a simple title page with your family name and reunion date and then create a section page for each family’s recipes, leaving space for a single photo (see examples). Use your computer to print out the recipe descriptions, again leaving space for a photo on each page. The recipes themselves can be laminated for durability (no photos added).

Contest Time

On the first night of the reunion, have each family bring a plateful or two of their favorite cookies. Take a picture of each mom (or dad) with their treats. Then, have your distinguished panel of judges—the grandkids, of course—sample each cookie. When it’s voting time, make it as formal as you want. For example, at Stacy’s reunion, the kids simply raised their hands to vote for their favorites. Or, you might decide to award prizes to the winners of different categories. Take a picture of each “judge” with his or her favorite cookie, and don’t forget to snap a few candid shots along the way.
