A
Simple Layout to Capture Current Events |
How
do you include current events, especially war issues, in your family scrapbook?
This simple layout uses newspaper headlines to answer this question and meet
this scrapbooking dilemma. The step-by-step instructions below could also be
used for other types of layouts in your scrapbooks. These easy "pockets" created
with paper strips are perfect for displaying almost any type of memorabilia in a
collage-type design. You can click on the layout to the left to
see it in
greater detail.
Materials Used:
- 1 Sheet 12x12 Solid Navy Cardstock
- 1 Sheet 12x12 Solid Red Cardstock
- Newspaper headlines photocopied and reduced on white cardstock
- 16 mirror nailheads - JewelCraft
- Die Cut title and Date - QuicKutz Sonja Upper and Lower, Marisa Mini Upper and Numbers
Instructions:
- Tear red cardstock into 4 strips.
- Adhere strips using two
nailheads on each end of strip.
Quick Tip: Setting nailheads is much easier if you place an upside down mouse pad under your layout. Simply stand the nailhead up on its prongs exactly where you want it to be on the finished design, press using the pad of your thumb to easily "pop" the nailhead prongs through the cardstock. Finish setting the nailhead by pressing each prong into the center using a wooden craft stick. - Trim photocopied newspaper headlines so that only the necessary information is included. Arrange on page, slipping each one slightly beneath one of the strips of red cardstock.
- Adhere title and the page is complete.
- Consider adding a journaling box which documents how the events in the headlines have affected you, your family, or your community.
Archival Tip: Always photocopy newspaper articles to include on your scrapbook pages. Newspaper is high in lignin and yellows very quickly. When you copy the headlines consider reducing the original size considerably. The headlines used in the sample were reduced 50%.
Design Tip: If you do not have nailheads, you could achieve the same effect by adhering the red cardstock strips with brads or eyelets.
If you do not have newspaper headlines to use for this layout, look for articles online at popular news web sites. Print these headlines on to white cardstock.
