Learn about what's included in a digital scrapbooking download

From

If you’re brand new to digital scrapbooking, getting an idea of what to expect in a digital scrapbooking kit can be very helpful. This list will name the different items you may find in a digital scrapbooking download and give you a quick overview of each.

1. Zip File

Before you get to unpack a digital scrapbooking kit, you’ll need to download it first. Most kits are packed into an archive file such as a ZIP or RAR file. This allows the kit designer to include multiple items in a single-click download. Sometimes downloads will be broken down into a few different ZIP files out of courtesy to digital scrapbookers who have slower internet connections.

2. Papers

Papers (or backgrounds) are usually .JPG files and most often sized just like paper scrapbooking backgrounds at either 12” x 12” or 8.5” x 11”. Most kit designers include a mix of patterned backgrounds and solid colored, textured backgrounds that match the theme and color scheme of the kit.

3. Elements

Elements (or embellishments) are the “page goodies.” They are delivered as .PNG files and often include items such as: flowers, bows, ribbons, tags, frames, word art, doodles and more. Some designers include non-shadowed version and versions with a drop shadow already applied to them.

4. Alphas

Alphas are lettering elements that are perfect for page titles and custom word art. They are delivered as .PNG files. Sometimes designers will include multiple letters in a single file that you need to “cut out” with your software and copy into your layout canvas. Other designers cut them for you so that you have one letter per file. Occasionally you will find designers who include both separate letters and the letters on sheets to let you choose what works best for you.

5. Quick Pages

Quick Pages are pre-made layouts that have “holes” left in them for your photos. These are most often delivered as .PNG files. You can use these as a very quick way to finish pages (by using them as-is) or use them as a “base page” that you further customize.

6. Templates

Layout Templates are layered files (often delivered as .PSD and .TIFF files) that are essentially layout sketches with a twist. Because you get the file in layers, you can use these page designs as templates that you “clip” your photos and favorite digital scrapbooking kit pieces to. The template provides all of the layout design for you, but you have the freedom to move layers around and customize the template in any way you choose.

7. TOU

The TOU file (or Terms of Use, or ReadMe) is the usage license for the kit you’ve just downloaded. It includes the copyright information of the kit designer and outlines how you can legally use the images in the kit. These files are often delivered as .TXT, .PDF or .JPG files. For a more in-depth look at TOU files, please see TOUs and You.

8. Other Included Items

Sometimes digital scrapbooking kit designers will include other items in their kit package such as a shortcut to their blog, store, Facebook page, etc.  This is so that you can easily reach them long after you’ve downloaded the kit. There also may be Anti-Piracy notices, coupons, thank you notes and more.
