A quarter of a century-what a difference

I started scrapbooking back in the 70s using construction paper, nylon netting and glue sticks. I also added bits of counted cross stitch. Nothing was acid free but luckily the pictures and pages remain the same---nothing has been damaged. Now there are so many papers to choose from and embellishments galore.

Scrapbook Crops and Retreats

It used to be that if you wanted to attend a crop you had to go to one hosted by a scrapbooking consultant who hoped you would by her supplies. I was once relegated to the kitched to crop by myself because I didn't have the same kind of album the consultant was selling. Yikes! Now more people are hosting their own crops and retreats. They bring store booths to you IF you want to purchase items. Retreat planners, use imaginative themes and offer contests and prizes. If you want ideas to host your own themed crop visit www.KeyLimeCrops.com We have unique crop ideas for games, decorations, prizes, make and take projects, food, music and more. The plans are easy, do-it-yourself outlines. Printable invitations and digital invites make it easy to get the party started.

I did a class ten years ago and it was all circles and stickers put me off so badly that it took friends conning me into trying it last year for me to see ok its not just a bored housewife thing, its now my artistic expression of choice. Anything goes.

Story

There obviously has been a lot of changes in the scrapbooking world over the last 10 years. More product. More tools. More artistic layouts. One trend or change that I have noticed lately is a greater focus on telling your story. I feel like my scrapbooking pages are less about how much product I can fit on a page or a new technique I might use, but about telling my story and remembering the wonderful moments that fill my life.

In the Beginning

When I first started 10yrs ago there were only 8 1/2 x 11 paper. Stickers, Shaped scissors, stickers. Went crazy cropping photos with the shaped scissors. What was I thinking. Now there are alot more variety in sizes of paper and scrap technoloy has arrived. Still love scrapbooking and sharing ideas with others. also got involved w/ cardmaking.

From past to present

Scrapbooking has become more advanced now, than it was before. with all the tools you have out there to use for different looks you want. It is a more expensive hobby now than it used to be before, as before we'd use lots of stickers to decorate our pages. Those days are gone for me, as now i use more embossing on my pages, and more mixed mediums to get different effects.

Way more creative!

I first got into scrapbooking about 10 years ago. I met with a few ladies and we had scrap nights where we borrowed each other's (expensive) tools. The most used techniques I remember were: stickers, paper punches (both tiny and odd shapes looking back) and paper piecing. I am completly in awe of the creativity of the pages these days, and that no medium is immune to being used in our pages now!

Matting everything and double pages

It took me awhile before I started matting everything. Also, I started doing only single pages and now I try to make them all doubles, because I want them in approximately date-of-event order, and I don't want to worry about whether one page's colours go with another single page's colours!

Tools-Tools-Tools

Gone are the days of meticulously struggling over details. There's a tool for everything, and everything has a tool!

Making my Own

I started Scrapbooking in 1996 and you had to make everything yourself. I have a Disney album where I had to make the titles and the journaling boxes. All you could find were stickers and ribbon. Acid free paper was hard to find and when you did it was plain colors. I have much more fun with my pages these days.

scrapbooking changes

I made my 1st scrapbook in 1999 for my daughter for her wedding. It was colored paper and stickers. Since then I have completed 4 more for 4 of my other children and have 2 more to go but have also made 5 albums for my mother and 4 heritage albums for myself, my sisters and my brother, as well as many other smaller albums. I find I still like the 12X 12 the best as I can get more on a page. I now find I journal more and don't use as many stickers. I also make cards now which I really enjoy and I use stamps on both my cards and in my scrapbooks. For a time I used a lot of embellisments but I don't now. I love sharing my supplies with others so I have an excuse to buy more. My yougest daughter has made numerous scrapbooking projects for school using my supplies and my oldest daughter does a lot of scrapbooking too.

Simpler and smaller

I like the way the size has changed. There are more options, and you can fit the size of the album to the event. No longer are scapebooks only 12 x 12, although those are still popular. Also, all the albums are easier to use. I like the new "D" ring albums that make it easier to organize pages, and I love the 6x6 and other mini albums. You can do a simple small book and feel you have acccomplished something.

Sticker Sneeze....

I was stuck on stickers when I first started. I barely use them now. Unless they are something that will actually go with my pages.
